Childcare assistance available to Soldiers and Army Families during PCSes to high-cost areas can be given as loans, grants or combination. The Army provides $1,700 per child per month, and AER will provide $500 per Family per month for costs more than $1,700 for three consecutive months after arriving at new post.

An area is considered high cost if the non-housing cost of living for that area exceeds a threshold of 108 percent, according to the Defense Travel Management Office.
