New Category of Assistance: Dignified Storage of Remains

Effective April 29, 2020, AER offers financial assistance for the dignified storage of remains while awaiting burial.

The COVID-19 crisis is causing delays for the processing of funerals and burials at cemeteries around the country. In response, AER is offering financial assistance for the dignified storage of remains of dependents (military-ID holding dependents) and certain non-dependents (parents, siblings, adult children) awaiting burial.

Assistance will be provided as a zero-interest loan with a cap of $3,000, which provides up to 30 days of storage at $100 per day. The assistance is provided as a zero-interest loan while Soldiers await receipt of Servicemembers Group Life Insurance (SGLI and FSGLI) benefits. Repayment is deferred for 90 days while Soldiers wait to receive their insurance benefits.

Assistance for dignified storage of remains follows routine AER eligibility, with Active Duty, Retired, and Active Guard Reserve Soldiers receiving full eligibility. Due to the COVID-19 crisis, eligibility is extended to Army National Guard (ARNG) and U.S. Army Reserve (USAR) activated on Title 10 or Title 32 orders in support of COVID-19. ARNG and USAR eligibility is restricted to dependents only.
