JULY 25 UPDATE: AER provided 151 Soldiers and Army Families with more than $70,900 in grants. AER provided funds through the American Red Cross to eligible individuals impacted by the storm. The funds were used for temporary lodging and food.

Hurricane Beryl made landfall July 8, leaving almost 3 million people in Texas without power, according to NPR.
“The Category 1 storm unleashed heavy rain and winds that uprooted trees and damaged homes and businesses along the Texas Coast and parts of Southeast Texas,” the report read. “State authorities have reported 18 deaths from Beryl. In the Houston area, some have been due to heat exposure following the loss of power, according to the medical examiner’s office in Harris County.”
Army Emergency Relief Headquarters is providing grants up to $600 each to eligible individuals impacted by the storm. Grants are available for basic essential needs like temporary lodging, food and fuel.
Those eligible for AER disaster relief assistance are:
- Soldiers on Active Duty and their eligible Family members.
- Soldiers retired from active duty because of longevity and their eligible Family members.
- Retired Army Reserve and National Guard Soldiers receiving retired pay and their Family members.
- Medically retired Soldiers and their dependents, including those placed on the Permanent Disability Retired List or Temporary Disability Retirement List.
- Surviving spouses and children of Soldiers who died while on active duty (including those on Title 10 Orders) or in an eligible retired status.
- Members of the Reserve component of the Army (National Guard and Army Reserve under Title 10 U.S.C) on continuous active duty for more than 30 consecutive days and their eligible Family members.
- “Grey Area” Retired Soldiers of the Reserve components (Army National Guard and U.S. Army Reserve)
- Title 10, Title 32, and TPU Army National Guard and Army Reserve Soldiers who are NOT mobilized;
- Title 10, Title 32, and TPU Army National Guard and Army Reserve Soldiers mobilized for less than 30
- Title 10, Title 32, and TPU Army National Guard and Army Reserve Soldiers activated in support of Beryl relief efforts.
Assistance will be retroactive to July 7, 2024, and applicants may apply for reimbursement as a one-time exception for basic essential needs and departure/return needs. Applicants will be required to provide receipts for expenses to be reimbursed by AER.
